WordPress repair: errors, white screen and crashes after updates
Is your site showing "There has been a critical error on this website", a white screen, or did the layout fall apart after an update? I find the cause in the logs, not by guessing, and fix it so it doesn't come back.
Most common diagnoses
- Error 500 and the "critical error" after a plugin, theme or PHP update
- White screen of death and an admin area that won't load
- Broken layout, a menu or page builder that stopped working (Elementor, Divi, Gutenberg)
- A form that doesn't send emails
- Redirect loops, database connection errors, memory exhausted
- Errors that appear only sometimes or only for some people
How I proceed
I start by reading: the PHP error log, the server log, the list and versions of plugins, recent changes. I don't change anything on the site at this stage. Often the log already points to the exact file and line where the error occurs.
Then I send a short proposal: what is wrong, how I will fix it, what the risks are, how I will verify the fix and how to roll it back. Only with your approval do I make the fix. Before every change I back up the affected files and the database.
At the end I go through the site in a browser on desktop and mobile, including the cart and checkout for online stores, and send you a clear summary.
Why not just disable plugins
Disabling plugins blindly in bulk may get the site running for a while, but it often breaks something else (orders, forms, SEO) and doesn't reveal the real cause. It's like amputating an arm over a splinter. I'd rather measure where the error comes from and fix exactly that spot.
FAQ
How quickly can you look at a broken site?
Crashes get priority. I usually get back to you the same business day and start the diagnosis as soon as I have access.
What access do you need?
Usually access to the WordPress admin and to the files (FTP/SFTP) or to the hosting control panel. I'll send you the exact list and a secure way to share it. When the work is done, I'll remind you to delete or change the passwords.
How much does a repair cost?
The diagnosis is free. After it I give you a fixed price for the repair, and once you approve it, I fix it. I don't charge anything without your approval.
From practice

The price comparison feed stopped updating after a site migration
A small online store moved to a new host. The site worked, orders kept coming in, and nobody noticed anything wrong. But the XML feed for a price comparison site was stuck at…

The checkout thank-you page returns HTTP 500, but only to bots
A site check found that the order confirmation page (/step/thank-you/) returns HTTP 500. On a store that looks alarming: customers might see an error right after they pay.

Occasional 3-second slowdowns, and no plugin to blame
From cache, pages loaded in about 0.15 s. Without cache (cart, checkout, logins, the first visit after a cache purge), load times swung between 0.8 and 4 s. The site just felt…
